The Unplugged Adventure: Helping Kids Disconnect to Reconnect

From smartphones to tablets, kids today often illuminate their faces with glowing screens. Technology entertains them, connects them to their friends, and serves as a wellspring of information. But as helpful as our devices can be, that constant connection comes at a cost - especially for developing young minds and bodies.

That's why it's so crucial to build in opportunities for kids to disconnect from the virtual world and reconnect with the natural one around them. At Children's Developmental Services, we encourage families to make unplugged adventures a regular part of life.

Because outdoor exploration isn't just outdoor fun - it cultivates crucial skills, creates lasting memories, and nurtures a child's curiosity about the world. This is also a state initiative called Get Wild Wyoming.

The Many Benefits of Disconnecting

When kids break away from the mesmerizing pull of devices, remarkable things happen.

  • They become less anxious and restless.

  • Their creativity and imagination flourish without constant entertainment.

  • They discover the simple wonders of sticks, stones, leaves and bugs.

  • Their bodies get much-needed exercise and fresh air.

  • Most importantly, kids build independence by problem-solving their way through new experiences and environments.

Finding Ways to Get Unplugged

Making outdoor, screen-free time for kids requires commitment from parents. It can help to set device-free times or zones in your home so there are built-in breaks. Model unplugged behavior yourself by joining your kids in their outdoor play.

Then, aim to get out of the house for small or large outdoor adventures on a regular basis.

  • Start small with your local park, hiking trail or neighborhood creek if exploring is new to your family.

  • Go all-out on a camping adventure to completely detox from devices.

  • The options are endless - hiking, climbing, boating, stargazing, picking flowers and more.

Cater activities to their age and ability to keep it fun.

Amp Up the Excitement

With a little creativity, you can amp up the excitement of outdoor time so kids won't even think about asking for a screen.

  • Turn your adventures into a scavenger hunt with themed checklists of things for them to find. Let them take along a camera or journal to help document their discoveries.

  • Build forts, play games like "I Spy," or guide them in using all five senses to engage with their surroundings.

  • One surefire attention-grabber for kids: pitching a tent and sleeping under the stars. Let them gaze at the night sky, then sleep surrounded by the cool night air and soothing sounds of nature. You'll build core memories they'll cherish forever.

While technology has its place, those moments of disconnect create powerful experiences that expand your child's mind, body and spirit. Even if you can only spare a few hours, break free from the devices occasionally to let your kids reconnect with the wonders of the outdoor world. It may just spark a lifelong appreciation for adventure.
